When to File an Amendment

If, after filing your return, you find a mistake, you might need to revise it. The IRS may accept returns without specific forms or schedules and may rectify math problems on a return. There is no need to revise your return in these circumstances!

If your filing status, income, deductions, or credits change, you must file an updated return using Form 1040X.

When You Need to File an Amendment

Filing Status Change

You need to change from single to married, or vice versa

Income Changes

You forgot to report income or need to correct reported income

Deduction Changes

You missed deductions or need to correct claimed deductions

Credit Changes

You missed tax credits or need to correct claimed credits

Time Limits for Filing

In general, you must file Form 1040X within 3 years of the initial return filing date or within 2 years of the tax payment date, whichever is later, in order to request a refund. Extensions aside, returns submitted earlier than the deadline are regarded as being submitted on that day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about amendment filing

How long do I have to file an amended return?

You generally have 3 years from the date you filed your original return, or 2 years from the date you paid the tax due, whichever is later. After this period, you can no longer claim a refund for that tax year.

Can I e-file an amended return?

Currently, the IRS does not allow e-filing for amended returns. Form 1040X must be filed by mail. We prepare and mail your amended return to the correct IRS address for your state.

How long does it take to process an amended return?

The IRS typically processes amended returns within 8-12 weeks from the date received. During peak tax season, processing may take longer. We track your amendment and keep you updated on its status.

Will filing an amendment trigger an audit?

Filing an amendment does not automatically trigger an audit. However, the IRS does review amended returns more carefully. We ensure your amendment is accurate and properly documented to minimize any audit risk.

What if I owe additional tax after amending?

If your amendment shows you owe additional tax, you should pay as soon as possible to minimize interest and penalties. Interest accrues from the original due date of the return. We can help calculate the exact amount owed.
